1) Business Domain Name Tips
If you are buying a .co.uk domain name (e.g. yournewbusiness.co.uk), make sure you also buy the other main TLD's (Top Level Domains) for the same prefix (e.g. yournewbusiness.com, yournewbusiness.net). This will ensure that no-one else can come in at a later stage and capitalize on your brand name using another major domain name type. Although there are dozens of TLD types available, we've always purchased the .co.uk, .com, .net and .org variants to protect our brands. There's no harm buying more variants, but do make sure you take care of the important ones.

How to Register a Domain Name
Go to one of the registars in this Web Page. Use their search engine to see if the domain name you're interested in is available. If the name you want is not available, the registars will offer you other similar ones, usually those with different suffixes than .com, such as .net or .biz. These suffixes are called "top level domains." Once you settle on one, complete the registration process by entering your contact information and paying the nominal fee.
What is a Domain Name?
A technical term for an address of a particular website on the internet, the domain name tells your browser where to look to access the pages you want to see. The domain name for this website, for example, is (2startawebsite.com) and you arrived at this page from clicking through one webpage to another, moving from one domain name to another, or by typing the exact address into the address bar of your browser.
What is a URL?
URL stands for Uniform Resource Locator, and forms the entire address used to access a particular website, including the domain name. URLs were devised as an easier form of internet navigation over IP Addresses that traditionally identify the host server for a website through a series of numbers. A URL uses easy to remember words and letters to replace the impractical IP Address method. Therefore, a URL for the HostingAndFree website would be www.HostingAndFree.com
and will contain the Hypertext Transfer protocol (http) allowing you to use words instead of an IP Address, and the domain name itself (www.HostingAndFree.com) identifying the server and the particular files on that server to be accessed.

3) Generalize your Domain Name
It is possible that your small business may grow into different areas of interest, or even change tack altogether. For this reason, it may be an idea not to make your domain name too specific to one area of your expertise. In some cases, the domain doesn't necessarily have to contain words related to your industry or brand - it certainly hasn't held Amazon or eBay back!
4) Short & Simple
Keep your domain name as short as possible and simple - it needs to be memorable, and preferably not contain hyphens
5) Is Keywords the right way to go?
A few web marketing firms suggest inserting your major keywords into your domain name wherever possible to help with your search engine rankings. We do not subscribe to this view. Sure, there may be some small benefits in having some keywords in your domain name (e.g. "the-best-web-designers.co.uk"), but your web promotion effort should come later. Your domain name should be chosen to best represent your company's interests rather than to please the fickle search engines!
6) Spaces and Symbols not in Domain
Grammar
Allowed characters - Domain names can only contain letters, numbers, and dashes. Spaces and symbols are not allowed. Domain names are not case sensitive.
7) Reliable & feature happy
Choose a reputable domain name supplier. A company which has been around a while and is well known is a good bet. We'd also recommend choosing a company which provides a user interface so that you can manually edit your domain name details (email forwarding, transferring your domain name elsewhere). We've used the ones shown in this webpage for all our domain name purchases for the past decade without a single problem.
2) Maintaining your domain name's
registration
Your domain name, like trademark rights, need to be periodically renewed, and can be kept indefinitely. Your registrar will send your administrative contact renewal notices, and the required renewal fees need to be paid. Make sure your administrative contact's address stays updated, and make sure these fees get paid --otherwise your rights to your domain name can be lost.

8) What are Subdomains?
Subdomains are additional sections to the url that further divide the existing domain name. Subdomains take the form www.subdomain.mysite.com.au, placing the new section title before the primary domain name identifier. This is most commonly seen with blogs, as it cleanly partitions off a section of the domain for this purpose. Subdomains do not need to be registered separately from your existing domain name, and can be created as you build your website.
9) Be Aware of Trademark names
You should ensure that your domain name is not a commonly known brand name or trademark. Something like "Microsoftwebdesign.co.uk" would not be a good choice! It can get dirty should a company like Microsoft decide to go legal on you.
10 ) Parking Domain Names
If you intend to buy a sizeable number of domains, try to 'park' them with one single domain name company. Domains are far easier to administrate and keep up-to-date if they are in a single place you trust.
